House of DUS is an award-winning architecture firm with a focus on design, community and technological innovation. The company was founded in 2004 by Hans Vermeulen, Hedwig Heinsman and Martine de Wit and has delivered projects of various scales ranging from product design to complex urban redevelopments.  In 2012, DUS initiated the 3D Print Canal House project to investigate digital fabrication in architecture. Now, House of DUS stands at the forefront of innovation as board of directors of Aectual, the successful commercial continuation of this investigation.

Aectual works together with Protospace and Xtrution in the project ‘XL 3D Printer’. The goal of this project is to develop smart technology for the building industry with the purpose to automize the full production pipeline from design to installation. This includes the development of XL 3D printers that create digital building products. For this the consortium received a contribution of €300.000 euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the ‘Kansen voor West II’ program. The province of Noord-Holland co-finances the project with a contribution of € 200.000.

As one of the co-founders of DUS Architects, Hans has over 15 years of experience in leading a firm at the forefront of architecture, inspired by his fascination for the informal (nano)city versus formal (mega)city. As co-founder of Aectual he puts his beliefs into practice, using technology to democratize architecture. Hans graduated from Delft University of Technology  in 2003 and studied at CEPT University in Ahmedabad. He is an international (keynote) speaker, teacher at  TU Delft and board member of several companies.

“Architecture is the backdrop for all human life.” With this belief, Hedwig co-founded DUS architects 15 years ago and currently leads Aectual as Chief Creative Officer in her vision to make unique design solutions available to the masses. She has a Master in Architecture from Delft University of Technology (Cum Laude) and studied at Helsinki University of Technology. She is an international keynote speaker, teacher at various architecture schools and has been a member of many worldwide architectural juries.

Jelle Feringa, software, architecture and robotic specialist, is as CTO of Aectual responsible for accelerating the technology to produce tailor-made building products at a mass scale. While previously founding EZCT Architecture and Design Research and working on his PhD thesis at Hyperbody TU Delft, Jelle established a full robotics lab at the RDM innovation dock in Rotterdam, which led to the technological foundation for Odico Formwork Robotics, which he co-founded. He exhibited at the Barbican Gallery, London Design Miami/Basel and Centre Pompidou, Paris, and his fabrication technology has been involved in the realization of several high-profile construction projects, including work of Zaha Hadid Architects and Studio Olafur Eliasson. He is an open-source developer, a long-term contributor of the pythonocc CAD kernel project, and fascinated by stereotomy and powertools.

Michiel combines his talent for finance and operations as CFOO of Aectual and brings a world of expertise to the company. After his MSc studies Technology Management at the faculty of Industrial engineering at the University Groningen (and a BSc in Art and Architectural History on the side) he worked as a Daytrader and soon became CFO of innovative growth company FiberCore Europe. Under his guidance the company grew from startup to world leader in its segment. He was a lecturer of Finance & Management at the Rotterdam Business School, mentor at Rockstart and at The Hague Innovators Academy / Leiden University, and uses his know-how of corporate finance, finance & control, marketing & patents to scale up Aectual.

As co-founder of DUS architects and Chief Print Officer of Aectual, Martine de Wit is the driving force who  brings concepts to realisation. She obtained her Master’s degree from Delft University of Technolgy and also studied at the ETH Zurich under the professorship of Greg Lynn. It was here where her fascination for digital fabrication started, which now comes to adulthood at Aectual. She teaches at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam and has over 12 years of experience in the architecture and building industry.

Ben Cerveny holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and has over 20 years of experience and involvement in over 20 leading innovation organizations, including Samsung and the makers of Flickr. User interaction and experience design as well as concept prototyping and strategy are his specialties. As interim director of software development of Aectual, he lead the team incorporating his knowledge of the digital related to the physical environment. Now he is a permanent great source of advice in our board of directors.

Marcel van de Vorst brings a wealth of experience to Aectual’s Advisory Board from being a lawyer, board member and investor. He has a strong track record with high-growth scale-up companies especially in the technology sector. As a lawyer, Marcel has a broad transactional and corporate advisory practice in venture capital, private equity and exit/M&A transactions. He recently co-founded a boutique firm following a long career in ‘big law’ with large international law firms. Marcel is an international dealmaker and he is regarded as one of the leading VC/PE lawyers for technology companies in the Netherlands. Marcel has invested in several tech companies and holds various board positions.
